Gapwaves’ vision is to be the most innovative provider of mm-wave antenna systems and the preferred partner to those pioneering next generation wireless technology for a safer and more sustainable society. By leveraging the disruptive Gapwaves technology we help pioneers within radar antenna and telecom industry to create highly efficient mmWave antenna systems that contribute to re-defining everyday life. Gapwaves markets are e.g. mmWave radar antennas for Advanced driving assistance and Autonomous vehicles, Smart cities, 5G telecom, Wireless communication, and beyond. For these systems, Gapwaves develops and supply waveguide and antenna products based on Gapwaves patented technology enabling low loss, high performance mmWave antennas in a compact form factor. Gapwaves waveguide technology is unique as it combines manufacturability, cost and performance for waveguide solutions.
Gapwaves is headquarted in Gothenburg, Sweden, with the entire world as our marketplace. Our team is a mix of competences from all across the globe.
Gapwaves was founded in 2011 by Prof. Per-Simon Kildal at Chalmers University of Technology and listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market in November 2016 with ca. 6,700 shareholders (per June 2024).
The Gapwaves Story
We love breakthroughs. Those seemingly simple solutions to seemingly impossible problems. And we like to imagine that magical moment of discovery made by our era’s very own Da Vinci. But as every engineer and every innovator knows, the truth is that by the time we hear about it that magical moment is ancient history. It’s taken years to perfect the product and the people involved have faced and overcome the toughest scrutiny – from their very peers So, with all of the time and effort needed to turn a breakthrough into a useful reality, what is it that allows them to make it all the way through?
The answer, well, we’ve seen it time and again. In fact it’s the moral of every great success story. That above all sometimes it pays to just believe in the people, no matter how crazy the idea. Because when backed by passion, crazy ideas suddenly don’t seem that far-fetched. Because the people behind them clearly see something real, and believe enough to dedicate their careers – their lives – to the discovery of what’s often a better way.
It’s this very belief in a better way that inspires millions of individuals to buy the latest mobile devices, step into a driverless car or shut the lights and just let the factory run itself. And, it’s what’s always inspired us at Gapwaves. In fact it’s our story.
Before going any further, it’s important to talk about our founder Per-Simon Kildal. Because it’s his approach to the solutions and people that set’s the tone for what we do and how we work.
A researcher and a professor with an extended patent portfolio related to antenna technology, Per-Simon Kildal has been called “crazy”, stubborn and a genius. And usually in that order. But for those who knew him, he was a smart man with a strong set of beliefs and a talent for finding a better way. He believed that regardless of no matter how complex the problem, or sophisticated the engineering the solution should be simple – easy to use.
He also believed dialogue to be the best kind of research. That sharing was the key to progress, because collaboration is the shortest path to turning new ideas into something useful. And this is what truly drove him; the ambition to turn great ideas into something useful.
It’s this approach – this mindset – that in 1988 led to the discovery of what is now regarded as one of the first conceptualizations of metamaterials; and a genuine breakthrough in electromagnetics. He knew it was big; that he had unlocked something truly useful. He just wasn’t sure how.
Nearly two decades later, this breakthrough would become the basis for Gapwaves waveguide technology, opening the door to a whole new era in advanced antenna technology.
Per-Simon was – quite simply – ahead of his time
To us, Per-Simon’s legacy, his greatest lesson to his students and beyond, has less to do with breakthrough technology and more to do with the journey to get there. The power and usefulness of being open, the joy in sharing ideas and the importance of collaboration and trust in good people – the essentials for finding a better way.
And that’s what we do.
